My Preferred Working Environment

With the leaving of my ex-boss to another department, now my another AM is leaving to actuarial also. The office suddenly becomes so quiet. Though actuarial department is same floor with mine, but since the her functional role changed to a more technical job, she becomes more quiet compared to her old days in my team.

I have no idea why our level is so still until nobody is talking to each other (except on the phone). The crowdest part in the level will be 1 unit radius around me. I will always talk with my 'neighbours' and i can bring laughter to them at most of the time. When it comes to geboh things, the lights will be on me. zzzzz. I have to maintain my Astro antenna on and off to get the latest 'worldwide' news as well as the updated lenglui list. LOL!!

Previously, there was a manager who opened musics with her laptop while working. However, that was after working time (5.15pm) and music volume was at the min. She was hesitating to open it loudly as the atmosphere here looks not so right for her to do so. In fact, i agreed with her opinion. Why an office need to be so quiet and serious? Can't we work in a more crowded atmosphere?

I preferred working time after 7pm where most of them went back home, leaving few of us in the office. I can shout to each other when calling each or chatting. Can say silly things loudly to every corner, and the good thing is there is always a reply! Once, i said something funny to the elders here. Im asking any of them can introduce their cousin daughter / any lenglui whom about the same age with me. Haha, we discussed until to get the 8 birthday numbers to check for compatibility. Beh tahan man!!

Sometimes, when i worked late maybe 8 sumthing, i even sing in the office but with the condition that about 90% of my colleageus went back. LOL!!Not the full song, but just some chorus of some old songs. Interesting was my AM joined my parade sometimes. Hehe!!

Though i enjoyed this kind of working environment, but i cant't always have that. Why? Coz it exceeded my normal working time, if i have to enjoy this environment which means im working OverTime. Shit!!! Maybe thats the trade off? Or maybe thats the retribution to me for working overtime. Haha..

1 year after my convocation

It's the convo time for almost all the local universities. Their ceremoy are held all around these threee days and it recalled about my own convocation as well.

My memories just cropped into my mind, the time with my coursemates, the time being scolded by Prof, the time being with my housemates, everything was so fresh in mind. We worked together in order to graduate, we played together as a friend, and some of them might cried together for assignments. I missed the time indeed.

It has been one year after my graduation, in other words, i worked for a year, i earned for a year, i paid my car installment for a year, i survive for a year. However, what else i have besides this?

Did I earn something? Nope. My bank account still at a pretty low amount.

Did a achieve anything? Nope, i have no success throughout this one year. There is no milestone for me in my first beginning year.

Did i find my partner for my life? Haha, obviously NOPE also!!!

Did i find my future? I can't see so currently and im in a misery of what i intended to be in my next couple of years.

A brief summary of my first year: - Blank

What the hell??

As you all know, the previous maid lefft to her hometown already with my passport. Hence, my auntie get another one for her service.

This time, they are hiring Cambodian rather than Indonesian as their perception was, Cambodian not as smart as Indonesian. How true is the statement? No idea!! The only thing that i know is they cant speak / understand Malay. I will believe that this will be one of the priveleges as they can't communicate with other male foreign workers nearby and subsequently to have some bad plans in mind.

However, her language has become a barrier to us also. Her only and only communication language will be English. Normally, the elders will deal more with her especially in the kitchen. You all should know the level of English that they can master. Luckily, my auntie at least know simple sentences. But not for my uncle.

FYI, I have 3 cousin sisters, where 2 of them graduated from NZ, and the youngest one is a kindergarden teacher. By right, their english is more than enough to communicate with her, even for myself, i should be able to communicate well with her. However, it turns out another way.

Now, their English level like downgraded to even worse then kindergarden students. They use the simplest word, not a structured sentence, with repetition, and with lots of eee, eeee, aaaaa, aaaaaa. Funny man. But to be honest, i also can't really speak well to her. I can't understand her English is one point, she can't get my question is another point. Is just like the chinese proverb:" chiken talking to the duck."

*vomit*

This is even worse to my uncle. He totally can't speak in English, and he kept talking to her in Malay. Obviously, the maid can't understand and when she question back, he can't understand as well. Ends up no one do the job. My uncle keeps complaining to his family, saying that the maid is no good and ignoring his order. What can you do when you can't understand the duty? Funny..

Few days ago, my uncle back from work and he noticed some arrangments by the maid was not to his satisfaction. He was frustated and went to the maid. You will never know how he spoke to her and it's damn funny man!!!

He scolded her for some time and bear in mind that, it was in Malay. The maid showing her with an innocent face, can't get any single point.

Before he ended it, he suddenly popped out with:

"What the hell!!!!"

Haha, imagine someone who can't speak in English, he knows about "What the hell!" His daughter didn't say anything, and instead they were curious why he know about this phrase.

When they reillustrated it back to me, i replied them:

"Soon, your father will know another phrase which is: What the Fuck!!! "

Lol!!!!

My EXCO

Having dinner once with the Chiefs of my company, I found out that besides the soberness they are having, they never lose their sense of humour as well… Below are some of the picks of the night. Before that some background:

Event : EXCO Offsite
Venue : Hilton Hotel, KL

This was my second time for offsite and previous visit was to Mandarin Oriental Hotel. On and off they will have this offsite meeting to discuss some of the major plans for the company or just to discuss in a more relaxed manner. Though I appreciate the opportunity given, but I really stress especially the night before when my team is still rushing for slides. Stress comes from slides that I did. Since I will be there the next day, im afraid that there are some mistakes / errors presented and we will be questioned on the spot. Notwithstanding this, we might be questioned on how we derive the numbers or required to justify the numbers. That’s the most terrible part which I always encounter. Justify!!!

It is reasonable for my worries as I did that before. I sent out a deck, during the time being presented, audience spotted errors as the numbers cannot be casted down. Worst part was, I show negative growth for linked business which is our strongest platform and it is impossible to happen.

Although nobody scolded me so far, but I felt guilty for doing such a silly, careless mistake. I was comforted by my ex-boss where the deck consists of bunch of numbers and it is normal to have mistakes. Besides, I have another 2 tiers or reviewer and it is their responsibilities to ensure the quality of the deck. Haiz.. Anyway, not the highlight for this post.. =)

In previous practice, we were not invited for dinner and they will enjoy their dinner themselves leaving us – the slaves behind. Finally, we were invited for nothing or perhaps can say appreciation.

Let’s come to picks of the night:

Chief Agency Officer (CAO):
A new CHRO was appointed in June and she is concern over the numbers and statistics which is quite different with the preceding CHRO. One of the thing she was looking at was the OT claim. Her staff approached CAO questioning him why his driver always OT until late night.

No explanation from him on this, but his real mind was-

“What the hell asking my drivers OT, when they were on OT, I am also doing my work. Why nobody compensating me on this or any concern? The drivers just need to wait and doing nothing in the car or even sleep for few hours where I’m still ‘fighting’ outside? The only moment that I sleep is when the driver is driving.”
He was absolutely right for this. Ring of laughters..

Chief Financial Officer (CFO):

The second course of the dinner was Shark’s Fin with lots of other nice stuff in there like mushrooms, sea cucumber etc. However our CFO doesn’t eat shark’s fin. There was another girl who doesn’t eat that, but it was due to she is a diver. Most of the divers won’t eat shark’s fin. Somebody from the table threw a question to CFO: “Why you do not eat shark’s fin? Is it due to allergy, preference, or religion?”
FYI, CFO is a muslim.

Somebody asking: “May I know which religion prohibits from eating shark’s fin?” Another ring of laughters. However, at this moment, CFO popped out with a reply:
“I believe in ‘Sharkism’” …. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Chief Product & Marketing (CMO):
He joined us not long ago and previously he was with Prudential, Korea. He was telling us his experience of driving in Msia compared to the time in Korea.
“We keep our cars in a distance to the car in front when on the road even during the jam. However, if I practice the same here, my car won’t be moving at all. Msian’s driving style – they will just cut in whenever there is a 1 inch gap. No way, but I have to move very close to reach my destination.” =)

“Besides, in Korea, we need to focus on left and right and of course the front view. In Msia, besides the 180 degrees from our eyesight, we need to expand it to 360 degrees. If you are not alert, you will be knocked by motorcyclists coming from all direction without following their own lane. I’m like so stress where I can’t move apart slightly from my existing lane. You will knock them down.”
So the advice to him, never give a signal when u want to cut in. Just cut in and give signal after that.. lol!!

Paintball

The first time I played paintball was last year December through the organizing of my company’s sport club. I din really have time to upload this event to my blog but now, I will combine both sessions together.

I was same team with actuarial (I promised them before my ex-boss engaged me). Since im the coordinator of the team, the calling of the team followed my department – Finance which they booed me on that day when the organizer labeled us as finance team. LOL.. However, this was the bridge that brought actuarial team and me together. Previously, we really seldom talk to each other as they were very busy doing their prophet running which I had totally no idea on it. They shared the same topic but not with me, and sometimes I find it really quite difficult to squeeze into their community.

But why I would like to squeeze in? It is just because there are more hot chicks over there rather than old auntie gang over my side..haha.. In fact, we are about the same age and hence I feel that we should have some common topic. The only interesting people in Finance is just my team where I always been with them, hence I need to expand my social network. If I can’t tackle any them, at least I will have some spy on my future targets - trainee.. haha

Back to the event, this was held in Sunway Extreme Park but not the open field. It is somewhere in the jungle where we played on a mud field. The game play was to grab the flag, whichever team who successfully bring their flag back to the base will be announced as the winner. Very luckily, my team was ranked as the second runner up with my great sacrifice as below… Of course, many of them experienced the same as me, but just that I was at the front line to grab the flag and of course I will be the centre of the aiming.. (besides, im having large surface area exposed)

I just have some of the pics pre n post of the event but not during the game.. haiz...

A very nice game indeed, and we truly enjoyed ourselves as many of us were struggling in the boring working life. It’s a bit tiring, but then its worth for your sweat and blood. Thanks to the organizer (whoever he is).

However, there was something imperfect here. As the marshals said, you din enjoy urself if you din get shot in this event. Pain though, but that’s the fun!! And out of the 21 fellows, I was the only one didn’t get hit at all and won 4 matches. I assumed that many of the readers will think that, because I hide all the time, that’s why I din get shot, but let me clarify here, I was the one who grabbed the flag for two games consecutively and one of my shoes was even stucked in the swamp. Ngek ngek…..

Finally, I’m proud with my bulky yet tangkas body. All of them placed the bet that I will the first one to be eliminated (first game was survival game with last man standing) just because of my size. WTF!! I have no confidence to challenge them though as I feel that I will be the target as well.. =(
Luckily one of the marshals guided me with some of the tips on the geographic condition which I fully utilized the privileges of that and won the game. Thanks to you Lisa!!

7 games played:
First : Eastgod vs Monkey team (bold was the winner) – last man standing with only one life
Second : Optimus vs SWAT – last man standing with only one life
Third : Eastgod vs SWAT – Grab the flag
Forth : Optimus vs Monkey – Grab the flag
Fifth : Top 10 plaers – Grab the flag (of course im in this and I won, wahaha)

Since many pellets left over, lets go for the sixth game:
Sixth : 6 of us vs 3 marshals – unlimited life until pellets finished or surrender (we lose, they were insane and many of us lose due to surrender, bleeding all over the body, but this was the best game.

Having some pellets again, the last game
Seventh : 2v2 – similar game play with the sixth game (personal revenge)

Whoa!!!! A very nice game!!!

Come on, lets start the game!!

Fucking service

I did something which me myself also cant forgive myself and that is something totally on my fault.

I have lost my passport and i suspected that is the maid who took it. I hide it in my wardrobe without any drawer. I put it underneath of all my shirts. Knowing she is going to leave on Sunday,i check my belongings quite often this few days. But still, i fail to keep my belongings.

Items lost: Passport and about $100 dollar.

Nothing much to talk about that. Just wanna raise up some of the issue i found in government office.

Police Station:

1) No officer on duty at night. Wonder what they do in case of emergency?
- i lodged police report at night, but they asked me to come again just to get the verification for the police report.

2) We can choose to lodge what kind of report.
- I told them i suspected my maid stole it. Then, they asked me how i want the report looks like. Loss or theft? She further mentioned that if it is a theft then it is more serious. To save the hassle, i just reported a loss.

3) They have no connection among government offices.
- I asked for Immigration Dept nearest to my house which i can re-apply for my passport. They only know two words: "Tak Tau"

Immigration department: (the most fucking service)

Im trying to login Immigration Dept website but i fail to do so for two days. Finally i got their hotline number through yellow pages and i called them. I inquired for the nearest immi dept in PJ, they only told me Pusat Bandar Damansara. In fact i don't know this place, and it is normal that i asked for the full address. The fucking receptionist told me that is the full address, just add in Jabatan Immigresen Malaysia.. I faint!!!

Second question, can i do it in any other branches for replacement of passport? She confidently tell me that any branches can do that. The next day, i went to Pudu to 'lelong' my bus ticket to Singapore (i planned to go sg this weekend), hence i went to the nearest located in Wangsa Maju. I reached there about 11am, take a long queue just to get a survey form but they referred me to the one at Pusat Bandar Damansara. Ok fine.. Patience.....

I reached the one in PBD about 12pm. I only realised that, report of loss is really very troublesome. I have to fill up the survey form, declaration letter (with the signature of commissioner for oath), normal application form and all the attachments.

However, one thing i cant understand that why they need letter from employer. They only give me two choices, either back to Perak to settle the case (with appealing, the procedure might go easier, since im from Perak), or get your letter from employer to confirm im working in KL. Hey man, this is Malaysia, im Malaysian, KL is one of the state and why cant i stay KL without working here? Why they need to question me bout this?

I understand that if Perak, things could be easier, but then i dun see a need to get the letter. Anybody can tell me? Fine, i dun wan to have another issue here, i just want things to be done. I called back to HR to get the letter. Heading towards carpark.

Another bad thing happen on me. My car was clamped due to i parked at the slot for immigration officer. Funny, normally reserved parking is quite obvious with the car plate number displayed largely on the spot. But theirs, just using a small font on the back of the wall. I parked in reverse direction and definitely i cant see the reserved parking at all. They summoned me on this, asking me to pay at the office.

Second hassle here, i cant find the office. I get summoned in Block I, but the office at Block E. Found it after i went through few blocks. So happy at the moment but their office was closed due to lunch hour.. WTF man!!! I called the phone on the summon and luckily i was able to get someone to remove the clamp. Whatever, i just pay him for that.

When i return back to the dept, i submitted my form at 3pm. I thought they will have enough time to process my application. I waited there for 1 and a half hour, they just gave me a statement that they were not able to process my application and asked me to come again for one interview session with the immigration officer, then only they will consider the case. Whoa!! Can you please tell me earlier?

For us, if we cant finish our work on that day, we need to work OT, how about them? Just give me a referense statement and u can go back? So unfair..Will they have KPI traking system? Anybody measure their SLA level? I was totally depressed coz of this.

Although they told me no penalty for the loss, but indirectly i was penalised, let me show you a simple arithmetic.

1) $100 - equivalent RM240
2) I took one day leave to settle this. for simplicity daily wage at RM100
3) Get into wrong direction, paying smart toll at RM2, kerinchi at RM1.5
4) parking at PBD - RM3.7
5) Clamp - RM50
6) Back to office to get letter, parking at RM3.5
7) Return immigration dept again, parking at RM5.2
8) Police report at RM2
9) Half tank of petrol - RM30

Tomorrow most probably i need another two hours (conservative thinking) and of course parking

10) tomorrow interview - RM 3.7
11) since i back office very late think the cheap parking slot is no longer available, parking in the more expensive one - RM10

TOTAL : RM449.60

Haven't count in the passport replacement of RM300.

variable cost : Not sure whether my bus ticket can be sold, if not, total loss is RM120 for the ticket.

Grand ToTal : RM869.60

Ok, fine.. can't imagine the chain effect from this.. Fuck it!!!

Smarter IT

Whoa... IT department of PAMB is getting smarter and smarter. Previously they are just too sucks in performing their work. Implement new policy without having sufficient analysis and hence causing troubles to the final end user.

Eg: They are concerning about the information sharing security issue and hence disable the share folder access. In the end, all departments complaining about this and had raised ticket of highest priority as all of us cannot work as usual. Reason being is we are accessing the same source file for our reference and of course sometimes we do editting on it, but we cant save so many versions in the server whereby it will cause confusion and missing in data when we compile togeder. What a stupid idiot's decision.

Now, they are becoming better in controlling software licensing issue. As i just switched to a new laptop, im one of the user who get in the enforcement of this new policy. Our administrative rights has been removed and alot of things we cant do.

The fucking part is i cant even do some user preference setting. Eg: i cant delete shortcut in my desktop, i cant change power options, i cant create a new file in C:. Damn mafan man.. everytime i need to make any changes, i will have to raise ticket to ask somebody to do it for me..

Other than this, their protection level is quite high which i am quite impressed. I should illustrate the whole flow so that you can feel the same as me..

There is no real player installed in this new machine and obviously i cant read rmvb file, which all of us access rmvb very often. I have no reason to justify myself to ask them install this for me. As what they said, this is a very powerful software which can read almost all different kinds of formats.

2 days later, i received a CD from our consulting firm containing the video file from CFO Away Day. I'm glad that i cant open the file with my office pc. Why? Coz i have the reason to justify. Ok, lets raise a ticket.

1st attempt: I know that real player is not allowed but supposingly Real Alternative can do the same or even k-lite codec pack. I asked for upgrade of the codec pack. They installed it for me, but they deselected real media files and disable the codec management feature for local user. WTF!! which means i still cant access.

2nd attempt: i told them i cant read the video file as well and please do something with it. They search online, search codec, search in forum, and finally they decided to try on Power DVD and Quicktime player. Which of course to no avail.

3rd attempt:can u please get it done? they search again and finally he comes out with the idea to install the software designated just for the file format - MOD. they were still insist not to install real player for me.. ok fine.. i give up, i dun think u will grant me the permission anyway.

4th attempt:i try to search online for alternative ways. and i found that there is something call portable media player classic where we can have it in a flash drive and run the application without any software being installed in the local plus can run without administrator rights. and again, i failed to do so as i cant get a proper download for this. i have the codecs and application differently. Anyone can guide me how to point the application to the library?

5th attempt:my ex-boss (tes) found this very challenging and would like to help me in circumvent this. we try an hour with his great knowledge in IT field and also his backdoor knowledge of course. Tried to force change extension naming, reinstall the thing in flash drive and many other ways.. result - negative..

6th attempt: i try to copy the needed codecs into my local (desktop) and to login in safe mode. Tried first selection - safe mode, which blocks me at the beginning since i am required to enter ID. stuck....

7th attempt: i tried to enter safe mode with comand prompt which ends up with the same as 6th attempt.

8th attempt: tried with the safe mode with networking. It works!!! but just for the login in part. I cannot copy or modify any files in safe mode... WTF!!!!

And i really pretty fade up of this. Anyone can help me with something? All ideas are welcomed. I wil treat him/her who successfully help me a great meal. Either give me a good link to download the complete version of portable media player.

IT, u impressed me!!! Really!!

SHINE!!!!

A simple conversation few days back, have enlightened me. However, I feel sad in this conversation as well.

My AM (for brevity – NSY) and myself met with our ex-boss on some business related issue. After that we were having a short discussion where we discussed about our future, our own individual development plan. He mentioned that all of us should have end in mind, what we wanna be in future years and how are we going to reach our target?

With regrets, I told him I have none. How about my aspirations? I have none. What field or which particular skill/knowledge that I would like to pursue? I have no idea. Although it is normal for me at this young age to have nothing in mind, but he wish to develop me further. Again he back to the exam schedule of mine. Frankly speaking, it was a great despair to me to fail twice for the first paper. I would wonder whether should I keep on trying or I just pick some other professionalism.
They told me that fail in exam is a norm among them. He even failed 4 times in one paper before he get passed, but bear in mind that, it was his last few papers. Mine was the first paper which was like double striking for two failures. So what can I do? I know that giving the excuses like im not well prepared la, it is not the subject that I interested la bla bla bla… I knew that the main reason was I can’t cope with the stress that comes from them.

Haiz, anyway let me think thrice about it and I will come out with my decision. The main point for this post was not about my exam though.

This topic was actually more towards NSY. She kinda boring with the work now and she learned all the things that she should learn here. Maybe not perfect, but she is good enough to handle everything here. She intended to be seconded over actuarial department. Although she grad with actuarial degree and she is actively pursuing the remaining papers, but she doesn’t have the technical knowledge that a traditional actuary should have and this has attracted her to the secondment.

I feel sorry that, I am one of the factors which pull her back from that decision. She is worrying that I cannot handle other stuff after her leaving especially its budgeting time for next year which I have zero exposure. FYI, the only doer in my team is just her and me. My ex-boss encouraged her that things will goes well when the time comes. There is nothing to worry about and she cannot concern on all things. Somebody is going to fix things when it goes wrong. In other words, I have to float in the middle of the ocean and find my own way.

He asked me:

“Are you willing to learn?”

“Yes, I do, just that I might need some guidance?”

“You are giving her a headache with this answer.”

“Thing goes well when the time comes, as long as you are willing to learn, it will be done.”

Then I told NSY:

“Perhaps I cant do perfectly as your work, but I will make sure it is done. No worries on me and I will pick up slowly.”

I just dun wanna be the burden of her to make her to stay. She needs to develop further and myself have to grow also. I agree that this is a great opportunity to prove myself and to show my capability as well. I must be confident to myself.
Everybody is supporting her to transfer even my big boss CFO. He dated her for lunch personally, but not sure about the issue. However she has the chance to voice out directly which CFO most likely to help her. He knows her caliber and appreciates her hard work.

Ex-boss pops out with one miracle sentence which strike my mind:
“When the light is on you, dun be shy, SHINE!!”

We are not immortal and we cannot handle everything, just go ahead with your own intention. Erm…

Deep thoughts…………………………………….

Will you eat alone in a restaurant?

I heard the above question this evening in My FM. The topic for the day was: "Will you eat alone in a restaurant?" The moment i heard this, i was stuck in the jam and since i have nothing to do, i do a stupid thing which was sending in sms.

A - Will
B - Won't

My answer was I won't. I feel like so lonely eating alone without any friends around. Sometimes when i passby the food stalls, looking at those lone rangers, i feel pity for them. I am wondering, why will they be alone? Hence, i wont let the same thing happen to me. That's why i will prefer tapao if i need to be alone.

I heard many of them sending in sms saying that eating alone have such advantages:

- To have peace in mind
- Can eat at own pace
- To be more relax
- Better digestion

In fact i agree to all those points, but why not we do it at home? Why we must have it in a public area? Anyway, i was even worse last time. I can't even go to cinema myself. Now, i will go to the cinema by myself but then under certain circumstances.

- when i were at outside and there is some buffer time before next activity
- when i were in bad mood

Nonetheless, until now, i still paiseh going to buy ticket for myself. I am not dare to look into the receptionist when i tell him/her only one ticket. My greatest record was watching two movies consecutively by myself. Jibaily paiseh to buy the tickets. Haiz..
